Elon Musk announces plan to give SpaceX shares to every child in America

Billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to give every child in the United States one share in his aerospace company, SpaceX, next year.

Musk disclosed the proposal in a post on X on Monday, saying the planned giveaway would be the first of several similar initiatives.

“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many,” he wrote.

Based on an estimated 73 million Americans under the age of 18 and a reported share price of about $146, the proposed giveaway could involve approximately $10.7 billion worth of stock.

However, Musk has not provided details on how the distribution would work or clarified which children would qualify for the proposed giveaway.

The announcement followed a proposal by artificial intelligence company Anthropic to allocate at least five per cent of its shares, reportedly valued at $48 billion based on its latest private valuation, to a Public Benefit Fund.

The fund is expected to support social causes through donations to non-profit organisations or direct payments to selected groups. Anthropic has also indicated that the initiative could help address the effects of artificial intelligence on employment.

Reacting to Anthropic’s proposal, Musk recommended distributing shares directly to the public, adding that he intended to follow that approach.

The announcements come amid growing debate over AI safety, potential job losses linked to automation and the environmental impact of expanding data centre infrastructure.

Musk’s proposed giveaway remains short on implementation details, and the estimated $10.7 billion value depends on the reported share price and number of eligible children.
